Reading Strategies

Recently in class, we have been reading a book called Purple Hibiscus written by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. The story revolves around a 15-year old girl named Kambili, who lives in Nigeria during a period of British colonialism. Now, this book is on a more advanced reading level than the books we have read previously in English 1, such as The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, so there is obviously a deeper level of thinking required to fully understand the book.
One method of reading that has helped me understand this book better is to read through the chapters first, and then go back and reread it while underlining and annotating the important information. Since it requires you reading the book twice, it can take some time, but it can definitely help you spot the information important to the story if you put enough time into it. However, this can be a difficulty for some people, as they might not have enough time on their hands to reread the book twice. For those people, I would recommend reading the book much more thoroughly once, so that they do not have to go and reread the book in order to find the important facts within the book.

  1. Danny, I agree with you this is the more advanced book we have had to read and it is ashamed we have been given so much to read each night. I have baseball practice and games after school and while I think reading it twice is best it just isn't possible. For that reason I did the reading responses.
